Greetings, all! For the past few months, my 2004 R171 SLK 350 has been experiencing occasional starting problems. When you turn the key, the engine won't turn over or the lights won't turn on. The N26/5 Electronic Steering Lock Control module is experiencing a communication problem, which is indicated by the code 9005. I thought it may be the lock or the ignition switch, so I sent the switch off for testing (since it's inexpensive and easy). It passed all the tests—20 tries with the and on the bench. The steering lock appears to be the problem. Just so you know, the steering is unlocked right now.
Since the failing steering lock is the cause of the ignition switch not working, the guy who tested it is going to ship me an emulator of the steering lock, which he says will start the car. Here are my enquiries for the forum:
1) In the event that the emulation is successful and the vehicle starts, would the steering lock stay unlocked or is it possible for it to reactivate even after unplugged? As a driver, I would be really worried if that happened.
2) Is the steering lock device completely detachable from an R171 without removing the steering column, now that the steering is unlocked? If that's the case, I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone might offer.
Much obliged

Just in case someone else is wondering, I have the answer now. Without locking the electronic steering lock:
1) It is possible to remove it from an SLK R171 without touching or repositioning the column.
2) Find the unit on the driver's side of the column; unhook the battery; remove the kick/knee panel above the pedals; and plug it in. My particular part number was A2034621130. Just so you know, please. Then, as seen in the photo below, remove the white connector.
3) Next, find a small silver pin at the end of the ELS (I thought it was a bolt because it was upside down and twisted, but its head is actually a D shape). Turn the T30 torx bit clockwise through 180 degrees to remove it.
Thirdly, the ELS may simply detach from the casing by pivoting on a few hooks.
By complete coincidence, I came over that data in a Google video showcasing a Mercedes Vito.

Prior to fixing it.
Was the automobile unlocked with the key?
Was there a change in where the key was located in the EIS as well?

Occasionally, yes. No issue getting the key out of the locked automobile. Occasionally, it would turn without doing anything, and other times, it would turn completely nonstop.
