Problem with the R171's steering lock

Greetings, all! For the past few months, my 2004 R171 SLK 350 has been experiencing occasional starting problems. When you turn the key, the engine won't turn over or the lights won't turn on. The N26/5 Electronic Steering Lock Control module is experiencing a communication problem, which is indicated by the code 9005. I thought it may be the lock or the ignition switch, so I sent the switch off for testing (since it's inexpensive and easy). It passed all the tests—20 tries with the and on the bench. The steering lock appears to be the problem. Just so you know, the steering is unlocked right now.
Since the failing steering lock is the cause of the ignition switch not working, the guy who tested it is going to ship me an emulator of the steering lock, which he says will start the car. Here are my enquiries for the forum:
1) In the event that the emulation is successful and the vehicle starts, would the steering lock stay unlocked or is it possible for it to reactivate even after unplugged? As a driver, I would be really worried if that happened.
2) Is the steering lock device completely detachable from an R171 without removing the steering column, now that the steering is unlocked? If that's the case, I would greatly appreciate any advice anyone might offer.
Much obliged
