A malfunctioning crank or cam sensor will not prevent the engine from cranking; it will crank smoothly but will not ignite.

Your description indicates a timing failure to me.
Failure of the electrical supply (or grounding) to the starter will not result in the engine ceasing operation.

To include slapping into the manifold, the plastic flaps must be fractured to facilitate the removal of the rod. I cannot remember whether the rod requires cutting or if it may be extracted as a single unit. Subsequently, it is necessary to install a blanking plug at the terminus of the manifold.
